Ideas for Golden Week

April 13, 2010

Dear Udder:

Golden Week is approaching, and I have my first vacation since coming to Japan to teach English.  Any suggestions for a relaxing holiday?

Yasumitai in Tokyo

Dear Yasu-chan:

Obviously, during Golden Week in Japan, the stampeding herds are famous!  My first suggestion would be to stay home, nibble some grass, and sip a mooogarita while watching the crowds on the nightly news. Believe me, you’ll feel superior.

If you really are determined to get away, I offer you two solutions:

Visit an out-of-the-way pasture where crowds will be minimal. The cows at Humor-Us recommend the Inland Sea, such as Shodoshima, Osakishimo-jima or our own Shiraishi Island, depending on your time and budget. Did you know that on Shiraishi you can stay at a minshuku on the beach for just 2,500 yen? You can also camp on both Shodoshima and Shiraishijima.

A second solution: Invest in a map and good coverings for your hooves and meander through Tokyo.  As you’ve probably realized, Tokyo is not so much a city as an area with many separate, small cities inside cities. Discover its neighborhoods and interesting crevices. Spend your first Golden Week discovering what glitters about Tokyo.

We hope to see you on the island, or stomping around Tokyo. Mooos to you.

If anyone else has good ideas for where to go for Golden Week, leave a comment!

Can I suggest the airshow at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni?

Looks like a day full of aMOOzement for the whole herd; bulls who like fast machines, calves who just wanna have fun, and cows who wanna look at the boys in uniform.

Even better that highway tolls will only be 1000yen each way.
(Watch out for the traffic though! Golden Week is literally a stampede.)
