Ushidō Travel: Utsukushigahara (美ヶ原), Nagano Prefecture

July 18, 2010

Utsukushigahara

For cows who love both art and wide open spaces, here’s where to find an art museum that’s truly out standing in its field.

Utsukushigahara, near Matsumoto City in Nagano prefecture, is a huge mountaintop meadow. It also happens to have a terrific open-air sculpture museum.

The Utsukushigahara Open-Air Museum is a sister museum to the Hakone Open-Air Museum. But the Utsukushigahara museum is much larger and (if I may say so) more cow-friendly.

The museum is 70 to 80 minutes by bus from the Matsumoto Bus Terminal. The fare is 2700 yen for a round-trip ticket, 1350 yen for children ages 6-11, free for children under 6 who ride in an adult’s lap.

Museum admission is 1000 yen, and the museum is open from 9am-5pm, late April through late November only.

Moooo christal! Thanks for your comment!

I’ve only been there once, in 1997, but we spent almost an entire day exploring the place and were totally blown away by the quality and quantity of the pieces. I’m definitely going back there again someday.
